The visa situation: check this before you book anything

This is genuinely in flux at the time of writing, and it matters more than anything else in this article.

Indian ordinary passport holders have been travelling to Thailand under a 60-day visa exemption introduced in 2024, and the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi has stated that this remains effective until further announcement. However, Thailand's Cabinet approved ending the 93-country 60-day exemption scheme in May 2026, and approved a revised framework in July 2026 under which India is reported to move to a shorter visa-free allowance.

The crucial detail: because the implementing announcements had not been published in the Royal Gazette as of mid-August 2026, travellers arriving now have still been receiving the 60-day stamp. That is a transitional position, not a stable one, and it can change on short notice once the gazette publication happens.

What to do about it: check the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi and the Thai Immigration Bureau directly, within days of booking and again before you fly. Do not rely on a blog — including this one — for the number of days you will be stamped in for. Plan a trip length that works under the shorter allowance, and treat anything longer as a bonus.

Getting to Haad Rin from India

Koh Phangan has no airport, so every route ends with a ferry. There are two sensible options.

The fast way — fly to Surat Thani. Fly into Bangkok, connect to Surat Thani (URT), take the shuttle bus to Donsak Pier, then the ferry across. From Surat Thani the crossing runs roughly two to three hours by high-speed ferry, and the whole airport-to-island leg is a manageable half day. Koh Samui's airport is the other air option and puts you a short ferry from Phangan, usually at a higher fare.

The cheap way — overland from Bangkok. An overnight train or bus from Bangkok takes roughly ten to twelve hours, then a bus-and-ferry combination adds another three to four. It is inexpensive and it eats a day at each end.

Once you dock at Thong Sala pier, shared taxis, songthaews and minibuses run down to Haad Rin in about thirty to forty minutes. That last leg gets slow and expensive on party night itself, which is an argument for arriving a day early.

There is an entry charge collected at the beach gates on the night — a modest amount in baht, though it has changed over the years, so carry cash and do not be surprised by it.

Building the trip around the date

A one-night trip to a monthly beach party is a poor use of an international flight. The sensible shape is seven to ten days with the party sitting in the middle.

Arrive on the island two days before the full moon. Accommodation on Haad Rin sells out and prices climb steeply in party week, so book weeks ahead, not days. Staying slightly away from Haad Rin — Baan Tai or Thong Sala — is cheaper and quieter, at the cost of a taxi.

Use the days either side properly. Koh Phangan away from Haad Rin is a genuinely lovely island: Bottle Beach, Than Sadet waterfall, the quieter north coast. Ang Thong Marine Park is a day trip. Koh Tao, a short ferry away, is one of the cheapest places in the world to learn to dive and is the reason a lot of people extend.

Consider bookending with Bangkok for a couple of days rather than treating it purely as a transit airport.

Costs

The flight from India is the main expense and swings with season. On the island, the cost driver is entirely when: a bungalow in party week can cost several times its ordinary-week rate, and the closer to Haad Rin, the sharper the multiple. Food and local transport are cheap; ferries and party-week accommodation are not.

Because those rates move constantly with the lunar calendar and season, we would rather you price your own dates than trust a headline number. The one budgeting rule that always holds: book accommodation early, and expect party week to cost what a mid-range holiday elsewhere would.

The safety part

This is a large, crowded beach party with alcohol, fire and the sea in close proximity, and it deserves plain speaking rather than winking.

• Drugs: Thailand's drug laws are severe and enforcement around this event is real. Anything offered to you on the beach is a risk to your liberty, not just your night. This is the single most important line in this article.
• Buckets: the cheap mixed drinks served in buckets are far stronger than they taste, and spiking is a documented problem. Watch your own drink being made and keep hold of it.
• Fire skipping and fire ropes: people are injured at this every month. It looks fun and it is a burn.
• Swimming: do not swim at night after drinking. This is how the serious incidents happen.
• Valuables: take the minimum — cash for the night, a cheap phone if you have one, and nothing you would mind losing. Petty theft is common in the crush.
• Stay together: go and leave with your group, agree a meeting point in advance for when the phone dies, and make sure someone knows where you are staying.
