Sar Pass vs Kedarkantha: Which Beginner Snow Trek Should You Do First

Ask ten first-time trekkers which snow trek to start with and you'll get Kedarkantha from most of them — it's the default answer for a reason. But Sar Pass deserves equal billing, and the two aren't actually interchangeable once you look past "both are beginner-friendly and both have snow." They run in different seasons, climb to different altitudes, and end in completely different ways. Here's the honest comparison from a team that runs both.

The season difference is the whole story

This is the one thing most comparisons get wrong, and it's worth correcting upfront: Sar Pass is a spring trek, not a monsoon one. The window is roughly April to June, when winter snow is still thick enough on the upper slopes for the trek's signature glissade descent but the weather has warmed enough to make camping comfortable. It is not recommended between December and February, when the pass itself can be dangerously snowed in. Kedarkantha runs the opposite half of the year — December through March — and is built entirely around deep winter snow. If you're planning around a specific month, the season alone may settle the question for you.

Where you start and what you're climbing

Sar Pass begins from Kasol, winding through Grahan, Min Thach and Nagaru before the pass itself, topping out around 13,800 ft. Kedarkantha starts from Sankri in Uttarakhand and summits at roughly 12,500 ft. Both are graded easy-to-moderate, both suit a reasonably fit first-timer, and neither demands technical climbing skill. Sar Pass's trail runs a little longer across more varied terrain — meadows, forest, and the pass itself; Kedarkantha's is more compact, with a shorter, steeper summit push on the final morning.

The descent that makes Sar Pass different

This is Sar Pass's real signature move, and it's not something Kedarkantha offers: once you cross the pass, the way down is a long snow slide — you sit, slide, and get down a slope that would otherwise take hours on foot in a matter of minutes. It's genuinely the moment people remember the trek for. Kedarkantha's reward is different in kind: a pre-dawn summit climb that opens onto a 360-degree view of the Swargarohini and Bandarpoonch ranges. One is a single thrilling descent; the other is a big-peak panorama. Neither is "better" — they're just different payoffs.

Who should pick which

If you want your first snow trek in spring, don't mind a slightly longer trail, and like the idea of literally sliding down a mountain at the end, Sar Pass is the pick. If winter is your available window, you want the shorter, more compact trek, and a classic Himalayan peak-panorama summit matters more to you than a novelty descent, go with Kedarkantha. Families with younger trekkers should note Sar Pass has a minimum age of around 10, which is worth checking against your group before booking either one.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sar Pass a monsoon trek?

No — this is a common mix-up. Sar Pass runs in spring, roughly April to June, when snow still holds on the upper slopes but the weather has warmed up. It is not recommended from December to February.

Which is harder, Sar Pass or Kedarkantha?

Both are graded easy-to-moderate. Sar Pass's trail is longer and crosses more varied terrain; Kedarkantha's summit push is shorter but steeper on the final morning. Neither requires technical skill.

What is the famous Sar Pass "slide"?

After crossing the pass, trekkers descend a long snow slope by sliding rather than walking — it covers in minutes what would otherwise take hours on foot and is the trek's signature moment.

Is there a minimum age for these treks?

Sar Pass typically has a minimum age of around 10. Check current age and fitness requirements with your operator before booking either trek.

Can a complete beginner do Sar Pass or Kedarkantha?

Yes, both are commonly recommended as first snow treks. Basic cardio fitness and proper cold-weather gear matter more than prior trekking experience.
