McLeodGanj and Dharamshala Travel Guide: What to Do, Where to Stay and How Long to Spend

McLeodGanj, Dharamkot, Bhagsu and Lower Dharamshala get lumped together as one destination, but each is its own base with a different character. Here's how to choose and how many days you actually need.

McLeodGanj and Dharamshala Travel Guide: What to Do, Where to Stay and How Long to Spend

"McLeodGanj" gets used as shorthand for the whole area, but it's really one of several distinct bases sitting close together on the same hillside — McLeodGanj itself, Dharamkot, Bhagsu, and Lower Dharamshala down the hill. They're genuinely different in character, and picking the right one (or splitting your time deliberately) matters more than most itineraries let on.

Which base actually suits you

McLeodGanj town is the obvious default, and for good reason: the Tsuglagkhang Complex and the Dalai Lama's residence, the main market, and the bulk of cafés and restaurants are all here, and it puts you within walking distance of Bhagsu and Dharamkot too. It has the most energy and the most options, which is exactly why most travellers end up happiest based here rather than further out. Dharamkot, a short walk or drive above McLeodGanj, is quieter and leans into the yoga-and-cafe crowd — a better fit if you want a slower pace without giving up easy access to town. Bhagsu, between the two, is smaller still, known mostly for its waterfall and a handful of guesthouses. Lower Dharamshala, down the hill, is more the administrative and cricket-stadium side of things — worth a stop, not a base.

A realistic 3-day structure

Day one: stay in McLeodGanj itself and cover the town core — the Tsuglagkhang Complex, Namgyal Monastery, and the market — at an unhurried pace rather than rushing to see everything by lunch. Day two: head out to Bhagsu and Dharamkot, mixing the short walk to Bhagsunag waterfall with wandering Dharamkot's quieter lanes, and time it to catch sunset from Naddi if you want the best Dhauladhar views of the trip. Day three: Lower Dharamshala for the cricket stadium and War Memorial if that interests you, or use the day as a buffer for the Triund add-on if you're up for it. Three days lets you cover this properly without feeling rushed; two days works if you're willing to skip Lower Dharamshala entirely and focus on McLeodGanj, Bhagsu and Dharamkot.

The Triund add-on

Triund, the short trek above McLeodGanj, is the natural extension if you have an extra day and reasonable fitness — but treat it as a genuine add-on day, not something to squeeze into your core three days alongside everything else. Trying to do the trek and a full day of town sightseeing on the same day usually means doing neither well.

Best time to go — and avoiding the weekend crush

March through June and October through November give the clearest mountain views and most comfortable temperatures. Beyond the season, timing your visit to avoid weekends matters more here than in a lot of hill stations — McLeodGanj gets noticeably busier on Saturdays and Sundays with day-trippers from Punjab and nearby cities, so a weekday visit means calmer streets and easier café seating.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay in McLeodGanj or Dharamkot?

McLeodGanj for convenience and energy — most sights and food options are walkable. Dharamkot if you want a quieter pace and don't mind a short walk or ride into town.

How many days do I need for McLeodGanj and Dharamshala?

3 days covers the area properly, including Bhagsu and Dharamkot. 2 days works if you skip Lower Dharamshala. Add a day if you want to do the Triund trek.

Is McLeodGanj the same as Dharamshala?

No — McLeodGanj is the upper hill town, while Dharamshala proper (Lower Dharamshala) sits down the hill and has a different, more administrative character.

When should I visit to avoid crowds?

Visit on weekdays if possible — weekends bring a noticeable increase in day-trippers. March-June and October-November are the best months for clear views.

Can I combine this trip with the Triund trek?

Yes, as a separate add-on day rather than folding it into your core sightseeing days.
