Lahaul Valley Guide: Sissu, Keylong and Jispa, and What the Atal Tunnel Actually Changed

Before 2020, Lahaul Valley was a summer-only destination, cut off from Manali for close to half the year once Rohtang Pass closed. The Atal Tunnel changed that fundamentally, but "changed" doesn't mean "always open" - there's still a real seasonal line inside the valley itself, and it moves depending on how far you're headed. Here's what each village actually looks like and when.

The tunnel itself: what it actually does

The Atal Tunnel runs about 9km through the Pir Panjal range at roughly 3,100m, and it operates 24 hours a day, every day, with free entry and a drive of under 15 minutes end to end. What it replaced was the old Rohtang Pass route, which typically only opened from around May to November. The tunnel doesn't eliminate winter in Lahaul - it just means you no longer need Rohtang open to get into the valley at all.

Sissu: the easiest entry, open nearly year-round

Sissu sits around 33-40km from Manali, roughly under an hour through the tunnel, at about 3,100-3,120m on the Chandra river. It's the first proper settlement after the tunnel and genuinely different in character from Manali - quieter, more Lahauli-Buddhist in feel, with the heart-shaped Sissu waterfall as the main draw. Because it's the closest village past the tunnel, Sissu stays the most reliably accessible point in Lahaul through winter, even when the road further in gets dicier.

Keylong: the region's actual hub

About 30km beyond Sissu, Keylong is Lahaul's administrative centre - markets, a more active local scene, and Khardung Monastery worth a stop. It functions as the natural base if you're continuing deeper into Lahaul or eventually toward Leh. Keylong generally stays reachable through winter via the tunnel route, though conditions can still turn a routine drive into a slow one after fresh snowfall.

Jispa: further in, and genuinely seasonal

Jispa sits about 20km past Keylong on the Bhaga river, roughly 140km and 4-5 hours from Manali via the classic route, right on the Manali-Leh Highway. This is where the "the tunnel opened Lahaul year-round" claim needs a real caveat: sources differ on exactly how far winter access extends, and the honest answer is that the Keylong-to-Jispa stretch and beyond is the part most likely to close depending on that year's snowfall, even though Sissu and Keylong themselves usually stay connected. If Jispa specifically is your destination in winter, check current road status before you commit rather than assuming the tunnel guarantees it.

Best time to visit

September-October gives the clearest skies and most reliable roads across all three villages, right after the monsoon clears and before winter cold sets in. May-June works well too, once Rohtang-adjacent snow has cleared for the season, with green valleys and pleasant temperatures. Winter (December-March) is genuinely striking if you want snow-covered Lahaul with none of the summer crowds, but temperatures can drop to -10 to -20°C and you should plan around Sissu and Keylong rather than assuming you'll reach Jispa.
